We can do this by cloning one of the list items: var newItem = $('list')getElement('li')clone(); We use the getElement method to select a single list item from the list, then we use clone to create a new element that copies the element However, if we look at the result of this snippet, we ll see that nothing changed: <ul id="list"> <li>Item A</li> <li>Item B</li> </ul> The clone was created, but it didn t appear in the DOM Tree What gives What happened is that the new element was indeed created, but it s not yet in the DOM Tree This is an important point that you have to understand: when you create new elements, they exist outside the DOM Tree They are not yet part of the DOM Tree, and you have to explicitly insert them using one of the movement methods we saw in the previous section.

InfoPath form in a browser As you can see, the browser-based experience is remarkably similar to the InfoPath experience, including drop-down calendars (see Figure 2-25), complex form validation rules, optional groups, repeating tables, and so on. Browser-based InfoPath forms will run in Internet Explorer (IE) 6+, Safari, Mozilla, Netscape 6+, and Firefox.

The magic piece of code is the line output.collect(key, val), which passes a key/value pair back to the framework for further processing. All map functions must implement the Mapper interface, which guarantees that the map function will always be called with a key. The key is an instance of a WritableComparable object, a value that is an instance of a Writable object, an output object, and a reporter. For now, just remember that the reporter is useful. Reporters are discussed in more detail in the Creating a Custom Mapper and Reducer section later in this chapter.

Browser-based forms even offer rich text editing. When editing a rich text field in a browserbased form, a small toolbar pops up, giving a rich text editor with which the user can add tables, hyperlinks, and richly formatted text.

During the height of the Ajax period, JavaScript developers realized that some of the programming tasks they were doing were repetitive and could be simplified, so developers started releasing frameworks and libraries that included utility functions for common tasks as well as other helper methods and objects that simplified JavaScript programming Throughout the years, though, most of these early frameworks and libraries became extinct, but a few of them survived and gained quite a following One of those frameworks is MooTools, which had its humble beginnings in a small animation library called MooFx Back in 2005, the dominant JavaScript framework was Prototype and its effects library called Scriptaculous Dissatisfied with Scriptaculous, Valerio Proietti created a new lightweight effects library for Prototype that emphasized code quality and size, and MooFx ended up being only 3KB uncompressed MooFx became the seed that sprouted the MooTools library.

The framework will make one call to your map function for each record in your input. There will be multiple instances of your map function running, potentially in multiple Java Virtual Machines (JVMs), and potentially on multiple machines. The framework coordinates all of this for you.
