If you must have a procedure with the same name as a MySQL function, putting a space between the name and the parentheses will help MySQL differentiate between the two. For example, a build in function for getting all uppercase text is upper(). We suggest you don t, but if you must create a stored procedure with the same name, use upper () (note the space between the name and the opening parenthesis) to distinguish it from the built-in function.

This information is useful for adjusting the time delay used by TimeBehavior. For instance, if an update takes 100 ms, there s no point having TimeBehavior fire off update() calls every 50 ms; its interval should be 100 ms or longer. The reported average varies quite a lot on my slowish Windows XP test machines, with values ranging between 50 ms and 100 ms. One factor is the complexity of the script being executed.

Caution Notice that the Visual Studio IDE is still in run mode when the game is tombstoned. It is there to make it easier to reconnect to the game if and when it is reactivated. It does not mean that the game is still running (it is not; it was still closed completely and has lost all its state). Don t let the fact that the IDE continues in run mode confuse you into thinking that the game is running in the background.

You can set parameters for a stored procedure using the following syntax: [IN|OUT|INOUT] <name> <data type> If you don t specify IN, OUT, or INOUT for the parameter, it will default to IN. These three types of parameters work as follows: An IN parameter is set and passed into the stored procedure to use internally in its processing. An OUT parameter is set within the procedure, but accessed by the caller. An INOUT parameter is passed into the procedure for internal use, but is also available to the caller after the procedure has completed. The name and data type of the parameter are used in the stored procedure for referencing and setting values going in and out of the procedure. The data type can be any valid data type for MySQL, and it specifies what type of data will be stored in the parameter. You ll see a detailed example of passing arguments in and out of a procedure in the Using Stored Procedures section (Listings 9-13 and 9-16) later in this chapter.

To return to the tombstoned game, click the Back button. The phone navigates back through the application stack, finds the game s tombstone marker and reactivates the game. This time, the game shows Game activated instead of Game launching. The game has still started absolutely from scratch, though. Because the Activated event fired instead of the Launching event, it is our cue to read the tombstoned data back into the application, and you will see how this is done shortly. One last thing to try is launching the game and tombstoning it once more by pressing the Windows button. This time, instead of pressing Back to return to the game, relaunch another instance of the game by clicking the circled arrow icon from the phone s start page and then clicking the game s icon in the application list, as shown in Figure 10 1.

Visual Studio returns to edit mode, and the tombstoned game instance cannot be reactivated by repeatedly using the Back button. This first instance is an example of a deactivated application that will never be reactivated. Now that we have seen how the application life cycle works, let s look at how to use it to allow state to persist between sessions when the game is tombstoned.
